A Gentle Night Ritual: Herbal Wine for Relaxation

A friend of mine hasn’t been sleeping well. You know the kind of tired where the body is exhausted but the mind won’t power down. Instead of suggesting another over-the-counter sleep aid, I made something slower and more intentional.

I infused red wine with valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), and blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea). These are herbs traditionally used to calm the nervous system. Valerian has clinical research supporting its role in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep. Passionflower and lemon balm are known for easing anxious thoughts and softening stress. Blue lotus has a long history of use for relaxation and dream enhancement.

I let the herbs steep in a bottle of red wine for about a week, shaking it daily, then strained it. The alcohol extracts the active compounds, turning a simple glass of wine into a concentrated herbal infusion.

This isn’t something you sip freely. Just one to two tablespoons about half an hour before bed is enough. The goal isn’t intoxication. It’s helping the nervous system exhale so sleep can come naturally.

It’s not for everyone. Anyone on antidepressants, sleep medications, or with liver concerns should avoid it. Herbs are powerful, especially when combined with alcohol.

But when used carefully and intentionally, it becomes more than a drink. It becomes an act of care. And sometimes helping someone rest is the most healing thing you can offer
